Contested Eden, a new work by Gabriela Lena Frank, reflects on the California wildfires and climate crisis.The work is presented as a dance video, with choreography by Molly Katzman, filmed on location by Swan Dive Media in CZU Lightning Complex Fire sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and music remotely-recorded by members of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra. Today at 5:30pm, Sean Van Winkle will be performing his last solo recital as a part of our Studio. Born of deep African origins, this form involves hand drumming, percussion and singing. This African diaspora-based music and culture is a living example of how art is can be a manifestation of the human desire to stay connected to one’s roots, ancestors, belief system, and home, even in the darkest of situations.
